A 19th-century architectural gem along the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France has been transformed into the Anantara Plaza Nice Hotel. Blending Old World elegance with contemporary luxury, the property’s interior design by London-based David Collins Studio evokes the glamorous legacy of the French Riviera.
“We began taking references from the location and sense of place, creating a contemporary narrative that informed the palette,” says Lewis Taylor, design director at David Collins. “This palette is then layered with interesting pieces of craftsmanship and commissioned artwork, which combine with the pared back architectural framework and clear operational flow.”
The tailored palette of soft, natural soft tones found throughout Anantara Plaza Nice Hotel draws inspiration from the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and Côte d’Azur’s golden age. Large-scale custom artwork of the sea and mountains flanks the reception desks and bespoke inlay rugs channel the distinctive stonework of Nice, while also amplifying a sense of place. Travertine columns in the lobby and sconce lighting recessed into gilded gold niches echo the tides of the ocean as well.
A similar rhythm ripples across the relaxed and understated rooftop restaurant, which is outfitted with pale bleached oak and furnishings distinguished with organic lines. A chic caviar and champagne lounge ensconces guests in an aesthetic reminiscent of Nice’s tropical gardens, and an afternoon tea room embodies the allure of a bygone era. Rounding out amenities is the Anantara Spa, which comprises five treatment rooms, a hammam, sauna, and 24-hour fitness center.
The hotel’s 151 rooms, which includes 38 suites, recall the natural splendor of the setting with marble surfaces, pastel tones, and rich textures that infuse tranquility. Subtle accents of wood and gold further evoke nature and stimulate the senses. The 580-square-foot Baie des Anges signature suite is a key standout in the guestroom lineup, endowed with an expansive living room, kitchenette, and panoramic terrace overlooking water vistas. Even grander, the 800-square-foot presidential suite on the fifth floor is equipped with a roomy terrace designed for sunbathing and private celebrations.
