Naladhu Private Island has emerged from a six-month renovation by New York-based architect Yuji Yamazaki. As part of the contemporary refresh, public spaces and each of the intimate retreat’s 20 “houses” were reinvigorated with a timeless sense of place.
“We were interested in the ambiguities in current design language in the South Eastern countries—the mixture of the West and the East,” Yamazaki says. “We wanted to emphasize the surrounding nature by blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor. We consciously injected spaces that are safe and comfortable, yet in which you are in nature feeling a sense of adventure and solitude.”
Indonesian teak furniture and other high-quality native materials—like Indonesian white stone—compose a lighter, more modern colonial palette.
Both house configurations comprise 3,230 square feet of living space endowed with ample seating, including outdoor swings and poolside chaise loungers, to promote relaxation. “Our aim was to advocate being slow and a bit lazy when the guests are using the rooms,” Yamazaki adds. Houses are also revamped to emphasize an immersive bond with nature. The Beach House with Pool option provides direct access to white sand beaches and a lagoon, while the Ocean House with Pool and Private Beach Cabana is equipped with a large terrace overlooking panoramic ocean vistas. An oversized daybed further instills luxury on the deck.
Totaling nearly 6,500 square feet, the Two Bedroom Beach Pool Residence serves as the centerpiece of the guestroom lineup, sleeping up to six guests. A pool and large oceanfront deck appointed with loungers, an alfresco dining area, and swing are featured along with the residence’s own private beach and lagoon.
