Chicago-area Hackney’s Restaurants has sponsored a Competition Studio class at the Harrington College of Design. The dining chain awarded $4,000 in prize money on December 15 to students who created redesign concepts for its Lake Avenue location. The ideas will be on display at the Senior Show at Harrington through March 9.
One element of the design program was to reuse existing elements (some taken from the old Oscar Mayer mansion in Chicago back in the sixties) such as walnut paneling, large carved arches, and stained glass windows. Part of the first place design (created by Galina Kapustina and Chelsey Jackel) focused on replicating the wooden arches and repeating them throughout the large entry and hall. They also combined four server stations and designed one that would be enclosed in curved walls made up of the large vintage stained glass windows relocated from other areas of the restaurant.
