Originally opened in 1984, Malliouhana sits atop a bluff, offering panoramic views on the island of Anguilla.
Todd-Avery Lenahan retained a recurring motif of Moorish arches that could not be removed due to structural ramifications, embracing them as instruments of the new aesthetic through the exterior and interiors.
The property’s remarkable sea views inspired Lenahan to compress the perceived distance from the front entry to the horizon line of the sea, dressing the open-air structure as a frame for the vistas.
Originally proposed for a much broader application, use of the glass mirror mosaic tile was contained to a limited area including the lobby. “The tile exploits Malliouhana’s voluminous space to add glamour,” Lenahan explains.
Anguilla’s heyday in the 1950s and ’60s inspired Lenahan to craft a midcentury-inspired aesthetic for Malliouhana.
Paintings by Haitian artist Jasmin Joseph, original to the hotel and depicting animated tropical scenes, are woven into to the theme of each guestroom.
The color palette is a range of tinted pastel hues in complementary pairings to highlight the architecture. Celadon, yellow, and coral figure prominently throughout.
Guestroom furniture is influenced by the hotel’s Moorish arches and seaside location.
The resort’s Sunset Bar features large earth tone sectional groupings and soft lighting from cream candles arranged in suspended birdcages hung at alternating heights.
The cliffside Restaurant at Malliouhana features nautical elements, such as black and copper suspended pendant lights and white, thick spun rope draped along an overhang reaching over intimate tables on the terrace.
