The second Indonesian offering from Alaya Hotels & Resorts, Alaya Resort Kuta was collaboratively designed by Martin Grounds of Perth, Australia-based Grounds Kent Architects (GKA), locally based landscape designer Made Wijaya, Moroccan-born interior designer Zohra Boukhari, locally based visual artist Pintor Sirait, and locally based fashion designer Peggy Hartanto.

Reflective stone flooring and twisted-metal light fixtures suspended from sky-like ceiling panels keep it light in the lobby, for which Sirait crafted a full-size, stainless steel Formula One racecar installation.

Star-shaped cutouts add visual interest in select spaces of the hotel.

Conceived solely by GKA, the 116-room hotel’s accommodations comprise deluxe rooms (shown); Alaya rooms, some with direct pool access; junior and family suites; and two approximately 328-square-foot Alaya suites.

Guestrooms feature salvaged teak and a neutral gray color palette, with some also including open-style bathrooms evoking a spa quality.

Each room also includes a full-height Bali surf wall with enlarged images by locally based photographer Jason Childs.

Wijaya designed the indoor-outdoor Sukun restaurant to mirror the connecting lobby with contiguous off-form concrete, star-shaped cutouts, and sky-patterned ceilings.

Rising above a pool in the central courtyard, a four-story mosaic wall “is the architectural highlight of the property,” Grounds says. “It was fabulously designed and carried out.”
