At Hotel Henry, Deborah Berke Partners marries past and present by retaining the former psychiatric hospital’s double staircase and exposed brick walls while adding a glass-and-steel atrium as the new entrance.

Spanning more than 93 acres, the castle-like complex was built by Henry Hobson Richardson in 1870 as part of the Kirkbride Plan, which embraced expansive, light-filled architecture to heal the mentally ill.

Original crossbeams in the 15-foot-wide hallways were restored with the addition of green and gray-splashed carpeting nodding to the calming waters of Lake Erie.

A gray and white palette dresses the 88 guestrooms, along with floral headboards that sit below photos of the building’s architectural elements.

A gallery-like feel pervades the lobby, with cozy alcoves for communal seating.

Light floods into 100 Acres restaurant, which takes up the entire first floor and includes an eclectic mix of seating, such as Windsor-style black chairs and banquettes.

In the lounge, purple and yellow tones on the furnishings complement grid-like wallpaper resembling constellations with soft-edged lines.
