Chef José Andrés has been nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize by Democratic Maryland Congressman John Delaney. The Nobel committee does not reveal nominees to the media, but Delaney briefly discussed his nomination with The Washington Post earlier this week.
The face of ThinkFoodGroup, which oversees Jaleo, Oyamel, and Minibar, Andrés is recognized by Delaney for his contributions to feeding Puerto Ricans in the wake of devastation following Hurricane Maria in 2017. Andrés and his nonprofit World Central Kitchen stationed sites across the island of Puerto Rico to provide 64,000 meals over the course of five months.
The deadline for nominations is February 1st, 2019, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee will name the laureates next October. 2017 and 2016 saw the two largest nomination pools in the organization’s history.
