Hospitality Design (HD) magazine today announced that it has named Karen Donaghy as publisher. Donaghy succeeds Paul Bienkowski, who retired in October following an extraordinary 40-plus year tenure with the brand.
A respected sales and marketing leader with deep experience across publishing, events, and digital strategy, Donaghy brings more than two decades of expertise serving the commercial interior design community. In her new role, she will oversee the brand’s print and digital engagement while leading growth initiatives across content, sales, and partnerships.
“I’m honored to build on HD’s legacy as the leading voice of hospitality design,” said Donaghy. “There is a tremendous opportunity to strengthen the experience we deliver across the brand’s media and events, particularly through digital. I look forward to working with this exceptional team to shape what’s next for the brand.”
Donaghy began her publishing career at Condé Nast and went on to hold leadership roles at Sandow’s Interior Design and Architizer. She also spent 13 years at Contract magazine, one of the leading publications covering commercial interiors, ultimately serving as publisher. Although Contract ceased publication in 2020 due to the pandemic, its legacy of design journalism and sector expertise continues to shape the broader design media landscape. Donaghy’s deep understanding of that legacy, combined with her experience supporting adjacent design sectors, positions her to meaningfully expand HD’s reach.
“Karen’s track record of building brands, driving revenue, and cultivating meaningful relationships makes her a great choice for HD’s next chapter,” said Alissa Ponchione, editor in chief of Hospitality Design. “Having known Karen during her time at Contract magazine, I was able to see how deeply she understands the needs and nuances of the design industry. That perspective will be invaluable as we continue to grow HD’s influence.”
A Long Island native now based outside Philadelphia, Donaghy spends significant time in New York City and has long been inspired by the designers, architects, and makers who shape the built environment.
