Vail Resorts has appointed David T. Shapiro as its new executive vice president and general counsel, effective as of July 13.
In addition to overseeing the company’s legal, governance, and compliance efforts, Shapiro will be responsible for its environmental programs, charitable giving, and public affairs.
“I am excited to have someone with David’s capabilities, experience, and leadership track record join our team,” says Rob Katz, chairman and CEO of Vail Resorts. “David brings a deep and sophisticated understanding of the complex legal, compliance, and public affairs issues facing large corporations and will be outstanding at guiding our company as we continue to broaden our scope and engagement in the mountain resort industry.”
From 2008 to 2015, Shapiro assumed several executive positions at DaVita Healthcare Partners, including a position as the general counsel and senior vice president for its kidney care business, where he headed the division’s legal work; and a role as senior vice president and chief compliance officer, for which he oversaw the company’s internal audit function.
Before his time with DaVita, Shapiro served as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Fraud section in Washington, DC from 2003 to 2007, and as an attorney in private practice at the law firms of Pepper Hamilton, Mintz Levin, and Kelley Drye & Warren.
Shapiro earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Trinity College and his law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law.
