Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas, a leading developer and operator of luxury hotels, resorts and spas, is continuing the expansion of its portfolio in Africa with the opening of its second resort in Mozambique. The 12-key Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort & Spa is idyllically located on a tiny private island in the Quirimbas archipelago off the country’s northern coast.
Less than one mile long and 985 feet wide, the former Medjumbe private island is reached by a 45 minute scenic light aircraft transfer from Pemba International Airport on the mainland, which is accessible from Mozambique’s capital Maputo or by global flights from Johannesburg or Dar es Salaam.
A boutique collection of 12 thatched beach pool villas line the beach and reveal panoramic Indian Ocean views. With direct beach access, a private pool, and a hammock, the charmingly furnished interiors blend comfortable luxury with Anantara’s signature modern amenities. Public spaces are stylish and understated, designed to provide the privacy that guests are seeking.
Chefs at the island resort’s Jahazi restaurant serve up a range of culinary styles, from local specialties to refined Western classics, including locally caught fresh seafood. The resort also features the Anantara Spa, a private retreat with a treatment suite and en-suite bathroom.
Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort & Spa is the second Anantara in Mozambique, following Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort & Spa, which joined the portfolio in December 2013. A third resort will be added next year—the 24-villa Matemo Island is currently closed for refurbishment and will be rebranded to Anantara Matemo Island Resort when it reopens. All three properties are part of Minor Hotel Group’s long-term strategic partnership with Rani Investment to own and operate properties in Mozambique.
