San Francisco-based Commune Hotels & Resorts has announced the opening of the Hall in Miami Beach by its boutique hotel brand, Joie de Vivre.
The 164-room hotel will be Joie de Vivre’s first East Coast property and located close to the beach, Ocean Drive, and the Miami Beach Convention Center. Its name references the Art Deco-style Haddon Hall designed by architect L. Murray Dixon and is one of three newly renovated three-story buildings comprising the property. All three will be connected by pathways.
Designer Robert McKinley, principal of New York-based Robert McKinley Creative Services, has been commissioned to design the hotel with a California aesthetic referencing the brand’s origin. Miami-based architecture firm ADD Inc. will also help spearhead the restoration of the historic property.
“The Hall speaks to a youthful and bold generation that has a deep appreciation for the heritage and tradition of an older culture but that is equally passionate about contemporary experiences and design,” says McKinley. “This was our guiding vision for the Hall, and through this interesting juxtaposition of new and old—infused with all things beach—we have created an experience that is in a class of its own.”
As he conceptualized the overall design, McKinley was inspired by 1960s beach culture. All guestrooms will be designed in the vein of a beach bungalow and feature original hardwood flooring, custom and reclaimed furnishings, and a palette of mint green and orange. Salmon-colored louvered doors and pastel green lacquer casegoods will be complemented by beach art by photographer Scott Rudin.
Guests can dine at the seaside café-inspired Sunny’s, designed by McKinley and headed by celebrity chef Spike Mendelsohn, which includes handmade wooden tables, all-weather reclaimed rebar chairs, and a countertop of Florida keystone.
Other amenities will include an Olympic-sized pool, a backyard bar, and an outdoor lounge.
The Hall is scheduled to open this summer.
