21c Museum Hotels, a boutique hotel, contemporary art museum, and restaurant group, has announced the debut of Counting House restaurant, located in downtown Durham, North Carolina. The restaurant and 21c Museum Hotel Durham allow visitors to experience the museum’s rotating exhibitions, participate in its cultural programs, and enjoy culinary offerings.
The design marries contemporary and historic details such as the building’s original terrazzo floors and double height windows. Counting House will also display site-specific art installations and rotating exhibitions. A full view of its open kitchen and spit roaster highlights the restaurant’s emphasis on slow-roasted cooking. The interior’s ceiling reaches a height of 23 feet and gradually lowers.
Counting House is headed by executive chef Josh Munchel who attended culinary school in Louisville, Kentucky and worked as a sous chef at 21c sister restaurant, Metropole, since its opening in 2012.
“Counting House is one of the most exciting and dynamic projects I’ve been a part of,” says Munchel. “I am honored to join the local community of chefs and restaurants and help celebrate Durham’s thriving restaurant scene.”
The chef’s own interpretation of classic dishes uses locally sourced, fresh ingredients and different herbs and spices to add an international flavor.
