Los Angeles-based interior design practice Bells & Whistles has collaborated on the design of the vibrant San Diego eatery, Animae, with Christopher Puffer, owner and partner of the new spot.
Occupying a 7,600 square feet on the ground floor of a luxury waterfront residence, the $5.5 million Pan Asian-American concept features a seductive interior defined by the juxtaposition of natural elements with Art Deco references, creating a theatrical atmosphere together. Custom jewel-toned booths are installed along with ceiling-length curtains, while Japanese design archetypes are reinterpreted through the carpeting reminiscent of the mossy forest floors of the subtropical Yakushima Island in Japan.
The dining room is outfitted with natural- stone tables serving coal fired, Asian-inspired dishes, combined with plush elements like large pendants, a gilded dining nook, heavy velvet curtains, and fringed columns.
Serving a ably crafted menu influenced from traditional Japanese cocktail bars, the visual impact of the cozy 15-seat bar inside the space is further amplified by a custom mural casting visitors in a warm glow.
