The Mandarin Oriental, New York celebrates the arrival of the Aviary NYC from Chicago-based co-owners chef Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas of the Alinea Group. Designed by locally based firm Tihany Design, the lounge crowns the hotel on the 35th floor and also features the speakeasy concept the Office NYC.
Reflecting core principles of the Aviary’s Chicago flagship, the new 90-seat venue frames panoramic views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows. Guests are welcomed via a circular lobby appointed with comfortable seating. The lobby descends into the Aviary NYC dining room, which is framed with gold woven metal mesh. Leather swivel chairs and rounded sofas installed alongside custom Decca art metal-topped coffee and cocktail tables accent the contemporary space. In addition to custom floor lamps, ribbon-like fixtures overhead emit gold light across the dark ceiling. Custom dark blue carpeting is accented with notes of white, beige, and tan tones.
Adjacent to the Aviary NYC’s glass-enclosed drink kitchen is the 44-seat Office NYC, which transports guests to the days of Prohibition. The space is equipped with an industrial-style metal beam as well as textured windowpanes that recall imagery of early 20th century New York. Smoky parquet wood spans the floor along with vintage area rugs, while deep-seated leather and suede club chairs offset wood-, bronze-, and marble-topped coffee tables. Hanging pendant bar lights illuminate the Office’s wood and bronze bar top.
