Japanese firm Imafuku Architects has crafted Dongshang, a new contemporary Japanese concept in central Beijing that is clad with extensive bamboo elements reflective of both Chinese and Japanese design traditions.
Bamboo strips are fixed upon walls and fold over the ceiling to establish tunnel-like spaces within two hallways. Lighting is also installed to filter through the strips akin to sunlight permeating through treetops. Inside the dining room, the bar is punctuated with vertical bamboo louvers as well as a backbar outfitted with liquor bottles illuminated upon black steel plates. Brass plates are featured in the dining room and in Dongshang’s two private rooms. Both private areas are equipped with acoustic boards to accommodate karaoke or lectures without disrupting the ambiance of the eatery.
