American eatery Bellwether has debuted in the Long Island City, Queens section of New York. Restaurant co-owner Matthew McCormick collaborated with Elizabeth Hardwick of locally based architecture practice Giants in the Dirt to instill a nature-inspired ambiance across the intimate concept.
A host stand made of reclaimed redwood from a former New York water tower greets guests upon arrival. Inside, neutral earth tones and artwork reflecting elements of all four seasons adorn the space. Anchored by a striking moss wall that frames a Mother of Pearl backsplash, the central bar is positioned to provoke conversation among guests, as does the airy 60-seat dining room. Bellwether features hand-patched, whitewashed brick walls beneath a suspended white wood pallet ceiling. Sculptures of collected driftwood grace the walls as well alongside simple shelves that host small potted succulents. The artwork Winter Topography from Snarkitecture and Calico serves as a thought-provoking disruption to the minimalist aesthetic.
