The new café Cardboard Bombay has opened in Mumbai’s bustling business district, outfitted with a materiality that demonstrates the versatility of the environmentally friendly cardboard. Aside from the building’s core and shell, Cardboard Bombay is punctuated with walls, chairs, tables, and lampshades composed of corrugated cardboard.
Locally based architecture studio Nudes treated its cardboard elements with wax to prevent damage from food or water. In addition to being resistant to humidity, water, and temperature changes, cardboard is also noted for its acoustic support. Layers of the material allow select tables to cantilever from the undulating partitions that create intricate pattern and textures that activate the interior.
