The Cha Le Teahouse has opened in Vancouver as a modernist interpretation of the traditional Chinese tea ritual. Local firm Leckie Studio Architecture + Design explores geometry and material uniformity in the minimalist eatery.
Wrapped in wood and other humble materials, the 674-square-foot space features an intricate plywood matrix that functions as an ordering system for the casework and retail display. The visual uniformity transmits a sense of calm into the café in alignment with the understated aesthetic of a traditional tea parlor. The design team softened hard edges with a light palette. Warmth is achieved through subdued, LED light panels designed to hover and blur the crisp lines of the grid. Natural light and white oak seating also accentuate the palette.
