Anna Polonsky and Amy Morris of the New York-based design practice the MP Shift have unveiled the design of the new Manhattan eatery De Maria in the city’s Nolita neighborhood. Highlighting the space’s storied past, the design reimagines the interior as an artist’s loft complete with Bauhaus references and tributes to the SoHo of the 1970s.
Against a backdrop of white brick walls, De Maria features wood paneling along the walls of an elevated dining enclave as well as the face of the bar. Caramel leather banquettes and light and dark wood complement pink surfaces. A central archway partitions the dining room and frames the bar for passersby on the sidewalk, with the bar’s geometric tile mural serving as the focal point. Beneath orb-like brass pendant lighting, the bar is accented with wooden stools topped with felt.
The restaurant’s namesake, the Virgin Mary, is commemorated in a bathroom portrait enhanced with neon elements for contemporary statement. Alfresco seating is also available along Kenmare Street, while a subterranean space hosts private events.
