Nearly 25 years after opening in San Francisco’s Mission District, Italian concept Delfina has reemerged following a thorough renovation. Helmed by locally based ROY Hospitality and Sarah Fucinaro of Fucinaro Architecture, the redesign draws upon Delfina’s legacy with an approachable but sophisticated sensibility. “We approached the design like rings of a tree—an evolution from the past, layered with the new, both in space and materials,” Fucinaro says. “The concept then centers around flirtations with different eras and elements of Italian design and architecture.”
Italian architecture serves as a key muse for the update, which infuses warmth across the dining room in contrast to the charming grit of the Mission District. Topped with zinc tables, original warm wood floors remain intact, while mosaic floors flow into the private dining room. Accented by an invigorating urban color palette, a casual California-style ambiance is also evoked through a palette of reused materials and natural textures, including old banquette wood and mixed metals. Modern lines make an impression in one section of the interior beneath a dramatic, arched ceiling uplit to enliven the atmosphere with a golden hue.
“Delfina embodies a high-end experience that isn’t for the fussy, and doesn’t take itself too seriously,” adds Hannah Collins, owner and principal designer of ROY. “The space, the food, and the concept all reflect that effortlessly cool feeling of the Mission and combine to embody a unique expression of what fine dining can feel like.”
