Following the success of sister restaurant The Salt Room, DesignLSM has crafted the double height building of The Coal Shed at the iconic London riverside destination One Tower Bridge. Restauranteur Raz Helalat first opened the space in 2011 with a grilled meat and fish heavy menu. So the firm’s design brief was to tailor the design to embody London’s culture and also bring out the restaurant’s “meat, fish, and fire” history.
A glazed façade invites guests in, who are first greeted inside by an atmospheric bar area decorated with soft gantry lighting and aged brass screens. The use of green marble, brunt timber, and aged bronze creates a masculine material palette and brings contrast and texture to the space. At the back of the dining area, the open kitchen gives patrons a view of the specialist charcoal cooking for which the restaurant is known. The mezzanine floor, meanwhile, overlooks the main room through framed black and steel screens, while the upstairs dining area features bespoke wine units globe pendants that illuminate displays of reclaimed leather belts.
As a final touch, the design team updated The Coal Shed’s signage, stationary, and logo to rebrand the restaurant as a unique London eatery.
