San Francisco eatery Flour + Water has reopened following a refresh by locally based studio Lundberg Design. The refined-yet-approachable concept showcases an updated aesthetic inspired by the restaurant’s artisanal approach to craftsmanship and handmade quality.
“Our design is unique to Flour + Water—it speaks to who they are and the sublime ingredients they use in their craft. The materials, the details, and the composition are all unique to their space,” says Lundberg design principal Olle Lundberg. “Flour + Water is elevated aesthetically from where it started but retains its tough, raw, and gutsy foundation.”
Culinary textures are integrated into the design concept, abounding in the form of a split-face marble garde manger station that echoes the topography of a freshly split wheel of parmesan and hand-plastered walls artfully raked in waves evocative of pasta shapes. Traditional materials like Italian marble and zinc paneling are installed to slowly patina over time in homage to Flour + Water’s history and longevity. An original soothing mural by artist Jessica Niello-White was also gently updated to correspond with the restaurant’s new chapter.
