This week, Gerber Group debuted its new bar and restaurant, Irvington, which serves New American cuisine with Mediterranean influences. The restaurant is housed in the street-level space at the W New York – Union Square, formerly home to Todd English’s OLIVES.
“We are extremely proud to introduce this bar and restaurant concept spearheaded by our new executive chef, David Nichols,” says Scott Gerber, principal and CEO of Gerber Group. “The down-to-earth menu at Irvington will feature flavorful ingredients from local farmers and purveyors for a complete greenmarket-to-table dining experience.”
Brooklyn-based Crème revamped the space, choosing organic design elements of wood and leather, mixed with an urban industrial palette of blackened metal and glass to realize a connection with the neighboring Union Square Greenmarket. The open kitchen features a brick stone oven, rotisserie, chef’s counter, and custom-built culinary suite.
An emphasis is placed on seasonally driven and locally sourced menu ingredients from a variety of local businesses. In addition to its culinary offerings, the restaurant’s bar program serves craft cocktails, bottled in-house; global wine offerings; small-batch spirits; and regionally brewed beers.
Notable New York author Washington Irving—whose impact is still felt in the Union Square community in which Washington Irving High School is located—inspired the restaurant’s name. A tongue-in-cheek, pop art painting by contemporary artist Marcus Pierce hanging above the kitchen features the well known Headless Horseman character from Washington Irving’s classic Sleepy Hollow.
