New Delhi-based architecture firm Group DCA has unveiled the design of the Backyard, a café and bar in New Delhi’s Green Park. An oasis in the middle of a chaotic street, the two-story space was designed to allow visitors to feel as though they are hanging out in a friend’s private backyard.
Design highlights on the ground floor include a long central bar that offers ample views of the exterior landscaping via floor to ceiling windows. Asymmetrically placed antique mirrors on the exposed pipe ceiling create the illusion of extra space, and reflect the dining area below. A white brick wall breaks the monotony of the wood flooring and dark charcoal walls. The chairs and tables are adjustable so that the space can easily be transformed from a sitting to a standing one.
The terrace on the top floor revolves around a central pergola structure. The furniture is created from crates and barrels, and the stools are made of industrial metal and reclaimed wood, to give the feel of a casual backyard full of reutilized objects. Accents include old bottles used for lighting. To add a rustic feel, the toilets are also made out of metal.
