The new Japanese dining concept, Akaiito Restaurant & Bar, has debuted in central Melbourne with HBA‘s local office overseeing the design of the modern eatery, which brings Japanese lore of the “red thread of destiny” to life.
Anchored by a central, stone-topped counter that accommodates up to 18 diners, the 54-seat interior is detailed with a bright red thread light feature that illuminates the exposed wooden ceilings. The unique illumination also highlights historic details of the building, including the bluestone walls and basement columns, in contrast to its modern configuration.
“We were inspired by the ancient Japanese legend of Akaiito and the heritage architectural details of the site,” says Margaret Brown, co-director of HBA Melbourne.
