Chinese eatery Jia, which translates to “home” in Mandarin, is set to open this spring in Port Washington, New York. Occupying a modest 800-square-foot layout, the forthcoming restaurant evokes a modern minimalism reminiscent of Nordic design executed by Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary studio Bespoke Only.
“Bespoke Only sought to create a quiet retreat that showcases the delicate and subtle nature of dim sum and Chinese cooking techniques that are often overlooked or unseen,” says founder and creative director Melissa Lee. “The dining experience is honest and homey, yet elegant and pleasing.”
Bleached wood and pale hues reinforce the seaside setting and compose a monochromatic palette contrasted against a gable roof to recall “a quintessential image of home,” Lee adds. Raw poplar planks adorn the vaulted ceiling, beneath which simple bench-style banquettes and a lightly blush-hued farm table line the perimeter of the room. A unique interplay of light and shadow appears throughout the dining room in contrast to the intimate, linear glow of the bar and bathrooms. Conical pendants and soft sculptural fixtures accentuate the unique shape of the ceiling as they illuminate the veins and tonality of the quartzite bar, which further channels the ocean in the chalet-like space.
