Spread across 1,615 square feet, the new izakaya concept Kanpai provides an authentic Japanese culinary experience in the heart of Milan. Locally based design firm Studio Vudafieri-Saverino Partners crafted the bar and restaurant to juxtapose contemporary Japan with the urban ambiance of Milan. The raw, industrial interior is balanced with subdued lighting and warm, relaxing tones to evoke comfort.
Three rooms comprise Kanpai, each with a distinctive color palette and aesthetic. The bar welcomes visitors with a large counter crafted with metal and bamboo wood that showcases sake and spirits. A lampshade made from an antique French bottle rack also serves as a key focal point of the room and is equipped with a zinc-plated corset that employs sake bottles to filter light. The second room is anchored by a large-scale mural from street artist Alessandro Di Vicino that reimagines the neon streetscapes of urban Japan. Finally, the third room is appointed with blue shades illuminated by 50 Japanese lanterns that appear to levitate above the tabletops. Bathrooms have also been designed to resemble the aesthetic of the Yamanote Line in Tokyo, complete with original voiceover announcements.
