Katsuya has unveiled upgraded designs at its Brentwood, Hollywood, and LA Live locations. Sbe design partner Philippe Starck, who drafted the initial design, led the makeovers of each restaurant.
The redesign of Katsuya Hollywood saw the installation of the 10-seat open-air sushi bar as well as a handpainted mural from Starck’s daughter, French artist Ara Starck, in the main dining room. Inspired by the concept of transcendence, Starck’s ceiling mural embraces a palette of pearly gray, gold, and neon to convey warmth
“Growing up in an artistic family taught me to and allowed me to express myself through an artistic medium. Being able to work alongside my father and create a mural in collaboration with his work at Katsuya Hollywood is an honor and I’m excited for guests to see our conjoined work,” she says.
Maintaining its oversized, backlit Japanese iconography and striking white leather, the eatery’s signature atmosphere is offset with traditional touches including natural wood, leather seating, and curated artwork. Sleek lines and open spaces characterize the restaurant along with glamorous, dramatic décor such as custom wallpaper of samurai helmets lining the walls of the private dining rooms, highlighting the juxtaposition of traditional Japanese design with modern dining. Tan furnishings further evoke the warm palette while heavy floor-to-ceiling curtains and ceiling lights reminiscent of Japanese lanterns add texture. Quirky figurines are spray-painted gold in homage to the playful nature of Starck’s design.
