A visit to coastal California served as a key source of inspiration for Canadian designer Alexandra Hutchison’s new Toronto eatery, La Palma. Located in the city’s Trinity-Bellwoods neighborhood, the Italian restaurant is the second launched by Hutchinson and her partner, chef Craig Harding.
Evoking the creative flair and natural backdrop of Venice Beach, California, La Palma is flooded with natural light via glass panels that adorn the massive garage-style doors. The contemporary, 2,700-square-foot interior is wrapped in a mostly white palette, while existing concrete floors are sealed in a custom-tinted epoxy resin. Local artist Madison van Rijn adorned the interior with a mural whose large brushstrokes stretch across the walls in shade of seafoam green, pink, and black.
In addition to the 1,400-square-foot main room, the restaurant also boasts a 28-seat private dining room, a 60-person cocktail area, and a rooftop patio.
