Shanghai-based design practice Neri&Hu has completed its latest F&B concept, Papi, in Paris’ 9th arrondissement. Located on the ground floor of a 19th-century Haussmann building, the 560-square-foot eatery conveys a layered material heritage that nods to the history of Parisian design.
Original elements, like old limestones and brick walls, were retained along with raw steel and brick columns that showcase natural imperfections. Furthermore, an original steel I-beam and historic stone molding exposed on the façade complements the neighborhood’s vernacular. Juxtaposing past and present, Neri&Hu upgraded the exterior with a new, fully operable steel-framed glass frontage—setting the tone for Papi’s interior, which is adorned with tile, glass, wood, and mirrored surfaces, which add depth and a unique perspective.
An oblong architectural intervention establishes an arena-like enclosure within the dining room and integrates all functional needs—from seating to the chef’s counter. Clad with handmade white ceramic tiles, the enclosure is also outfitted with large openings framed by thick birch plywood that provides additional seating for guests. A long custom pendant is suspended above the central communal table, with additional wall lighting positioned nearby to illuminate the white ceramic flooring and aged limestone walls.
