The Park MGM Resort and Casino in Las Vegas has unveiled its new cocktail bar, Mama Rabbit. Designed by Toronto-based firm DesignAgency, the space draws heavily upon the influence of Oaxaca, Mexico, which the studio’s principal Anwar Mekhayech explored alongside Los Angeles-based writer, restaurateur, and mezcal aficionado Bricia Lopez.
The vivid venture is richly textured and layered with patterns synonymous with Mexican modernism. Colorful geometries are amplified off the walls in homage to the legacy of celebrated Mexican architect Luis Barragán. Artful whimsy is further infused across the interiors in the form of a floor-to-ceiling mural by Spanish artist Okuda and 400 Barro Negro rabbit figurines made custom by Oaxacan ceramicists, while the bar is anchored by a 40-foot-tall display of artisanal mezcal and tequila bottles opposite a textured brick wall.
“Oaxaca is a bastion of indigenous culture, home to the country’s most vibrant crafts, outstanding colorful and extroverted festivities, uniquely savory cuisine, and diverse natural riches. Bricia inspired us with the legend of Mayahuel, the goddess of agave, and her 400 rabbit children who each represent a different form of drunkenness & spirituality,” says Mekhayech. “Our design concept honors this folklore with playfulness and artistry integrated into both Mama Rabbit’s name and its interior design.”
In addition, an intimate lounge seating is also installed beneath a cavernous, vaulted brick colonnade, along with banquettes lining five lounge areas partitioned by retractable shutters.
