Third-wave coffee pioneer Intelligentsia Coffee has expanded its U.S. footprint with the opening of its first outpost in Austin, Texas. The new coffee concept in town is crafted by locally based architect Scott Magic, in homage to the amazing geology of the natural swimming holes of the Texas Hill Country. Reinterpreted throughout the interior, those geographical wonders peak in many forms, including the abstract mural executed by Austin artist, Erin Curtis.
Composed of site-specific Texas Gray Lueders limestone found in the swimming holes of the Lone Star State, the horseshoe-shaped bar anchors the interior against the backdrop of the sprawling mural. The artwork not only shields all of the onsite air conditioning and back-of-house systems, but also complements the palette of brickwork across the space. Comprising a medley of leftover or rejected tones, the location’s locally sourced bricks also include those manufactured by Elgin Butler Company as early as 1870.
