Washington, DC-based firm GrizForm Design Architects has completed work on the refresh of Scala’s Bistro, marking its first project in San Francisco. Tasked with updating and brightening the 143-seat Union Square Park restaurant, the firm’s design was inspired by Parisian bistros with striking ceilings, colorful tiles, and original murals.
With a color palette of gold, black, and cream, the elegant redesign respects its roots with minimal finishes to infuse a more contemporary flair. The cast iron ceilings of the original design have been finished in a glossy black and metallic finish, while wood-clad wall panels have been repainted black. A variety of ceiling heights distinguish each of the spaces across 2,615 square feet, with the dining room appointed with banquettes and custom, antique-inspired lighting.
