Atlanta-based design firm Square Feet Studio has completed the new eatery Big Bad Breakfast within the historic Steep and Deep building in the Homewood section of Birmingham, Alabama. Housed above the regional institution the Red Lion, the restaurant occupies two floors that previously served as a retail hub. The concept boasts a rustic Americana-style aesthetic as well as checked floors and cozy wooden booths.
Architectural steel channels were installed to frame new, large openings, providing a subtle contrast to the existing masonry façade of the building. The landmark’s existing slate roof and signage are preserved to commemorate its history. Roll-up doors have also been added to the north and south elevations to ensure an organic connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
