A new eatery, Otto’s Burger, has opened inside a former bakery in the historic heart of Cologne, Germany. Renovated by Amsterdam-based design practice Studio Modijefsky, the storefront pays homage to its history in a fresh, contemporary way, while keeping functionality top of mind.
Spanning 3,550 square feet, Otto’s Burger comprises an L-shaped layout with an open kitchen that unifies the space. A variety of shapes, patterns, and colors—including hues of yellow, green, and blue—served as the jumping off point for the interior. Speckled tiles and horizontal mirror slabs extend toward the heart of the restaurant, and terrazzo floors span the near of the restaurant. The incorporation of wood flooring and furnishings soften the design.
