Ben & Jerry’s has opened a new location in 313@Somerset Discovery Walk, a mixed-use development in Singapore.
Designed by San Francisco-based Tesser, who completed work on the company’s flagship location in Burlington, Vermont, the ice creamery is a small, 650-square-foot location that sits flush against a wall with three sides exposed to a high-traffic shopping area. Partitions are either completely open or made of glass, allowing visitors a clear sightline of their surroundings.
Unlike other global Ben & Jerry’s locations, the Discovery Walk property was too small to install a decorative 1960s bus. However, Tesser was able to convey the brand’s counterculture identity with other elements like signage that reads, “If it’s not fun, why do it? – Jerry.” Milk bottle-inspired pendant lights hang from cloud-like groupings on the ceiling, while stools are upholstered in a cow pattern. A wall-scene that depicts Vermont’s rolling hills in the seating area is clad in cow graphics engendering a barn-like atmosphere.
“The smaller footprint required our design team to be even more creative with space usage and storage,” says B. Todi, account manager at Tesser. “In addition to elevating the brand and conveying key messaging, we needed to accommodate many scoop shop essentials, such as two dip cases, pint and cake freezers, an oven for brownies and cookies, merchandise display, and all equipment for making smoothies, shakes, and sundaes.”
