The Orchard, a new Mediterranean-Asian eatery in Calgary, channels eclectic muses to weave an enchanting narrative ensconced in nature. Crafted by Canadian practices Bold Workshop and Sturgess Architecture, the restaurant’s interior design takes cues from abandoned, overgrown Spanish cathedrals, as well as the urban landscape of its metropolitan setting in Alberta, Canada.
The cozy-yet-theatrical project is punctuated by abundant greenery and a natural materiality of wood, stone, and brass to compose a forested oasis in the heart of Calgary’s downtown. The restaurant’s spacious bar, adorned with a brass mural by local artist Cassie Suche, serves as a key focal point, while a canopy of handcrafted chandeliers stretched across the dining room establish a luxurious ambiance. Furthermore, handsome furnishings call to mind European supper clubs, and an intricate gridwork of wooden shelving makes a strong visual impact by contextualizing the scale of the interior and simultaneously showcasing spirits and additional plant life.
