Developed by Union Square Hospitality Group, Untitled restaurant has opened in New York’s new Whitney Museum of American Art.
Untitled is the first-ever restaurant opening for executive chef and managing director Michael Anthony, formerly of Gramercy Tavern. The menu was designed to reflect the neighborhood’s urban character, the nearby High Line’s landscape, and the museum’s contemporary form. Anthony is also in charge of the more casual 66-seat Studio Café, which is located on the museum’s eighth floor and features a 52-seat adjacent terrace that wraps around the corner of the building.
“It’s a privilege to open Untitled and Studio Café in the Whitney museum’s new home amidst the ongoing renaissance of the Meatpacking District,” says Union Square Hospitality Group CEO Danny Meyer. “This is an incredible milestone for Mike and his team, and a proud victory for the growth of our company. My hope is that Untitled becomes a favorite neighborhood spot as well as a destination in its own right.”
Adds Anthony: “I’ve been fortunate to cook in some of the best kitchens in the world, but this moment is truly special for me because Untitled is the first restaurant that I’ve helped conceive from scratch.”
Both Untitled and the museum were designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, which has offices in New York, Paris, and Genoa, Italy. The restaurant is located on the museum’s ground floor within a glass-enclosed plaza. The space reflects the architectural design of the Whitney and the industrial history of the Meatpacking District with elements of steel, stone, concrete, and wood along with an open, stainless steel kitchen that spans nearly half the room’s length. The kitchen hood, counter, and bar are clad in white oak.
The restaurant’s sole artwork, a contemporary piece by Robert Indiana, hangs above the 10-seat bar and features the illuminated word “EAT” in bold white block letters on a circular black backdrop. A 72-seat dining room with white oak tables and red dining chairs sits opposite the bar and open kitchen.
