The andBeyond Kirkman’s Kamp has unveiled the redesign of its cottages and public spaces by Sandton, South Africa-based Fox Browne Creative. Located on South Africa’s Sabi Sand Game Reserve, the retreat embraces a nostalgic ethos through a design anchored in Old World character with a modern twist. “Our design brief for Kirkman’s was to give the old farmstead buildings a facelift but not mess with the spirit and character of the much loved ‘old world’ Kirkman’s Kamp,” says Fox Browne cofounder and co-owner Chris Browne.
Reminiscent of the glamourous Roaring Twenties, the redesign elevates the camp’s 12 cottages with new private bars, outdoor seating areas, and wallpaper murals depicting a bushveld scene. Bathrooms were fully overhauled to accommodate extra-large showers and double vanities. Embossed tiling, ribbed glass, and marble elements are installed to complement the 1920s aesthetic. “The biggest statement has been the bathrooms,” fellow cofounder and co-owner Debra Fox says of the redesign. “The loos also have their own wallpaper lined cubicles.”
Social areas are crafted with a more contemporary edge complete with new furniture, lighting, and wooden floors. The lodge’s dining room has also been restyled to create new spaces, including a coffee bar. The onsite bar remains the focal point of the property, boasting an expanded seating capacity.
