Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen has fused five buildings in Antwerp, Belgium to form August—a new hotel concept housed within a former Augustinian convent. Now home to 44 guestrooms, the property represents an homage to the city’s cultural history in the newly revitalized Green Quarter.
A sense of openness permeates across the hotel, which conveys a restrained palette that allows original details and select statement pieces to shine. The former private nun’s chapel is now occupied by the hotel’s bar and lounge, while two terraced townhouses adjacent to the chapel feature an outdoor swimming pool attached to the onsite spa. An opulent library, the sundrenched August Bar, and modern brasserie concept round out the onsite amenities.
Original convent chambers located behind the chapel are reimagined as intimate accommodations, which range from 170 to 450 square feet. . Bespoke finishes punctuate each space, from handwoven Portuguese carpeting to bathrooms lined with hand-glazed Italian tiles. Guestrooms overlook all three of August’s walled gardens, while suites are attached to terraces that frame views of the chapel, courtyard, and pond.
