Baglioni Hotels & Resorts has announced that it will assume management of the Masseria Muzza hotel in Puglia, Italy. The property will reopen in May 2022 following a comprehensive facelift by Milan-based interior design firm Spagnulo & Partners. Upgrades will include the addition of five new suites, an outdoor bar and lounge, a children’s club, and wine cellar.
“The design is strongly referred to the local cultural tradition, both in terms of materials,” says Spagnulo founding partner Federico Spagnulo. “This approach will give to the Baglioni collection the opportunity to have a completely new destination linked to the history and the soul of Puglia.”
A materiality of Lecce stone and ceramics sourced from the Italian town of Grottaglie will complement the hotel’s existing palatial vernacular. Anchoring the five-acre site is a whitewashed 17th-century structure that sets a precedent for the evolution of Masseria Muzza’s aesthetic. “Arches, vaults, high doors, and stone cornices are some of the existing architectural languages, which have been the historical base of all design choices of the restyling project,” Spagnulo adds. “That’s why all the used materials—stones, woods, fabrics, ceramics—are a new interpretation of this mentioned great tradition.”
Housed within former stables and barns, accommodations will line the perimeter of the central courtyard and boast high vaulted ceilings and original stone elements. Select units will feature balconies and verandas overlooking the Alimini Lakes and the Adriatic Sea just beyond.
