The 161-room Bankside hotel is set to debut in London in September 2018 along the south bank of the River Thames. Situated near major landmarks like the Tate Modern and Borough Market, the six-story glass structure will be housed within the Ian Simpson-designed One Blackfriars development and feature interiors from Dayna Lee of Los Angeles-based Powerstrip Studios.
The interior will be outfitted with light-filled, white cube meeting and event spaces, designated coworking areas, and a casual neighborhood-style restaurant and bar with an outdoor terrace. The residential-style, midcentury modern aesthetic will be balanced with an eclectic mix of bespoke furniture and artwork that celebrates local craftsmanship and history. Sustainability will also be emphasized with power-saving elements like rooftop beehives, responsibly sourced wood, and non- or low-VOC paints.
“We wanted to create a genuine boutique hotel for the modern mindset, with calm rooms and creative public spaces that reflect the vibrant, history-steeped community of [South Bank],” says Lee. “We’ve had fun celebrating the local artistic community, including post-kiln pottery drying racks for shelves [and] kid-leather-covered furnishings conjuring an art school experience and punctuating these with lots of luxurious, custom-made features.”
