Reminiscent of the city’s glamorous days of the 1930s, the Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li has debuted within the cultural preservation zone of the city’s Xuhui District. Crafted by Jaya International Design and Bangkok-based Blink Design Group, the all-villa, urban resort is spread across a cluster of historic shikumen—or stone gate—townhouses. The property reflects Shanghai’s timeless architectural heritage as well as a classic Parisian flair.
Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li includes 55 shikumen villas and 40 luxury residences. The one-, two-, and three-bedroom shikumen villas vary in scale from nearly 1,200 to 2,700 square feet, and feature king and twin beds in the two- and three-bedroom villas. The design is conceived to recall the traditional communal living experiences typical of 1930s Shanghai, and includes elegant French-accented furniture that complement Chinese sensibilities via artwork, accessories, and local materials. Details like chic wall panels and silk wallpaper balance Impressionist artwork and wrought iron, metal-legged tables and button-upholstered headboards.
Designed with high ceilings, locally sourced wooden screens, and Art Deco-style mirrors, the living room-style lobby hosts a library, tearoom, and executive meeting area. The resort is home to le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire, chef Pierre Gagnaire’s first restaurant in mainland China. The airy 70-seat eatery is also outfitted with a 40-seat bar and a bakery within the Gallery. The Lab hosts the interactive show kitchen for up to eight guests, in addition to the semiprivate seating area. The onsite Auriga Spa is home to a fitness center, floatation tank, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, and salt-wall lounge. Event spaces include the outdoor Secret Garden and terrace, while the boardroom, library, and two living rooms are outfitted indoors.
