The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island has opened the world’s first underwater hotel residence. Named Muraka, which means “coral” in the local language of Dhivehi, the villa spans two stories above and below the Indian Ocean. Tokyo-based designer Yuji Yamazaki oversaw the design of the dynamic project as well as the designs for the resort’s newly revamped Deluxe Beach Villas, also located in the Maldives.
Perched on the surface of the water, the top floor features amenities including a private fitness center, bar, butler’s quarters, and a private jetty. An infinity pool, an ocean-facing bathtub, and an outdoor relaxation deck are installed as well. Sixteen feet below the waves, the villa houses a king-sized bedroom, living area, and bathroom within an all-glass atmosphere that frames 180-degree panoramic views of marine life. A spiral staircase and elevator are outfitted into the design for a seamless upstairs-downstairs transition.
Crafted using acrylic from Japanese aquarium manufacturer Nippura, the 600-ton structure is sealed with a Shin-Etsu Silicone sealant and secured to the ocean floor with concrete pylons to ensure the structure remains unmoored by rough tides.
