Cypress Inn in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California is undergoing a transformative renovation led by Charles Gruwell Design Studio.
The inn—housed in a 93-year-old Spanish Revival-style building featuring with arched doorways and a whitewashed façade— has long been a cherished landmark in the area.
The reimagined vision for Cypress Inn is a delicate dance between the past, present, and future. Drawing inspiration from late actress Doris Day, who was celebrated for her love for animals and old Hollywood glamour, the redesign will imbue the property with a coastal aesthetic that mirrors the spirit of Carmel.
At reception, guests will be greeted by intricate ceiling moldings, newly appointed millwork, and local artwork. The year-round courtyard, featuring a retractable glass roof and permanent heaters, will nod to French sidewalk cafés with updated tables and chairs framed with greenery.
The Doris Day Living Room will promise a lavish ambiance with new drapery, sofas, lounge chairs, mirrors flanking a historical fireplace, and classic stenciling adorning wood ceiling beams. Terry’s Lounge, meanwhile, will get a Moroccan-themed revamp, complete with eclectic lanterns, ambient music, and textured moldings.
Guestroom corridors will be updated with brighter walls, new stained doors, Moroccan-inspired arches, pendant light fixtures, and patterned corridor carpets. Individually styled guestrooms boast a Spanish coastal ambiance defined by leather elements, area rugs, stenciling, wrought iron sconces, and curated art.
