Tokyo-based Design Studio Spin recently completed a multiphase renovation of the Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo. The property is located 45 floors up in the Midtown Tower, the city’s tallest building.
The project began with a redesign of the hotel’s signature Hinokizaka restaurant, which reopened in 2014, and the lobby lounge and bar. The guestrooms and Club Lounge revamp mark its completion.
Inspired by the city’s skyline, the luxury hotel, situated in the Roppongi District—famous for its nightlife scene—features an aesthetic rooted in its surroundings with Japanese-inspired flourishes and natural design elements that merge an East-meets-West vibe seamlessly.
A modern flare pervades the 36 suites with a rich color palette of gray, purple, and red. Furnishings refer to Japanese patterns, including wallcoverings that resemble imaginary flora called so-so-ge while others resemble a kimono belt. Bamboo-clad carpeting and contemporary artwork add whimsy to the design.
The residentially inspired Club Lounge comprises a reception area, garden terrace, dining room, and library lounge. Carpeting throughout the four distinct spaces was crafted to resemble Japanese stone pavement, while fans made of cypress wood nod to nearby Hinoki Park. Wallpaper decorated with scattered silver leaves represent haze.
