Ian Schrager’s Edition Hotels brand has rolled out its newest outpost within the art deco monument and former headquarters of Shanghai Power Company. Located on the tree-lined Huang Pu River port on the Bund, the Edition includes a new tower, built to harmonize with the heritage building and house the hotel’s 145 guestrooms and suites. Designed with Schrager’s signature, opulent style, the Shanghai Edition welcomes visitors with a contemporary reinterpretation of refined elegance.
Crafted by French designer Eric Schmitt, a striking large-scale pendant light acts as the centerpiece of the lobby. Installed beneath a cantilevered canopy, the jewel-like LED sphere offsets the warmth of the interior’s rich walnut fittings and grey stone walls. The versatile lobby also includes the lobby bar, which boasts a plaster relief artwork inspired by carvings typical of Shikumen—or stone-gated—housing in Shanghai. A portal between the old and new structures, the urban lobby is outfitted with a hanging garden, while a seven-story antique mirror adorns the back wall of the contemporary space.
Rising up a bronze grand spiral staircase is the Punch Room, a modern interpretation of London’s 19th-century private clubs. On the mezzanine, the Roof hosts a panoramic view of the Pudong from the Bund, complete with a main bar enclosed within a wooden trellis lined with climbing ivy. The 27th floor of the skyscraper features the glamorous, Neri & Hu-designed HIYA restaurant from chef Jason Atherton, who also helms the all-day, brasserie-style venue Shanghai Tavern on the first floor. The latter restaurant reflects the influence of Elliot Hazzard’s period architecture with coffered ceilings and a communal atmosphere. The Canton Disco, a traditional Cantonese option, is designed by Black Sheep Group with a contemporary flair across five private rooms. In addition to versatile meeting and event spaces, the fifth floor is home to the Club Room, which draws inspiration from a gentlemen’s lounge, complete with a screening room and a karaoke room. Finally, the VIP, Studio 54-inspired nightlife venue Electric Circus promises a dramatic experience on the seventh floor.
Laidback, modern luxury characterize all of the guestrooms and suites. Custom furniture and curated textiles complement the state-of-the-art beds, while bathrooms boast finishes of white marble and black metal detailing. Slanted windows frame views of the city while also instilling an insulated sense of calm. The walls and floors of each bedroom and living area are adorned with light oak, creating a sense of warmth.
Home to six treatment rooms and suites, the Spa at the Shanghai Edition includes a sauna, an expansive relaxation area, a bar, and a boutique. A swimming pool on the fifth floor overlooks the urban sprawl of Shanghai, while the 24-hour fitness center on the seventh level boasts a large outdoor terrace.
