Starwood has announced that Element, its eco-friendly extended stay brand will debut in Detroit in the city’s historic Metropolitan Building—part of the property’s transformation into a mixed-use development, the result of a partnership between the Detroit-based Means Group and Roxbury Group.
The adaptive reuse project will mirror the revitalization efforts in the area, including the recently opened Aloft Detroit in the revamped David Whitney building. For the Element project, the 14-story neo-Gothic structure’s exterior will be restored and all interiors renovated, maximizing the ornate details of the lobby and mezzanine. Originally designed by the Detroit-based firm Weston and Ellington, the building debuted as a jewelry emporium in 1925.
The 100,000-square-foot property will house 110 guestrooms, a 24-hour fitness center, an indoor pool, 2,000 square feet of meeting space on the mezzanine level with views of the skyline, and an 11th-floor rear rooftop outdoor patio. Generously sized studios and one-bedroom suites will include modular furniture, fully equipped kitchens, and spa-inspired bathrooms, while the ground floor will offer 7,000 square feet of retail venues.
Element Detroit at the Metropolitan Building is slated to open in 2018. The brand also anticipates multiple openings in 2017, including in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Lauderdale, London, Tanzania, and Hebei, China.
