Foster + Partners has completed work on the revamp of the Murray Hotel in Hong Kong’s central business district. Slated to open as a flagship property for Niccolo Hotels within the coming weeks, the hotel is housed within the 27-story office tower originally designed by Ron Phillips almost 50 years ago. Its renovation of the historic landmark arrives as part of the city’s Conserving Central Initiative.
The property’s former office floors have all been remodeled to host 336 guestrooms and suites, all of which overlook the city and its surrounding greenery. The new design maintains the original façade, upgrading it with recessed windows in response to the regional climate. New frontage at street level embraces transparency and further contextualizes the hotel within the urban environment. Landscaped grounds will be expanded to include a public tai chi area, while a large tree that has existed on the site for years will be preserved and rise through a podium originating at the base of the structure to punctuate the arrival experience. The tower’s base will feature a series of arched openings for a classic touch, while the rooftop maximizes panoramic views from its bar.
