The Four Seasons Hotel the Westcliff Johannesburg has opened in South Africa.
Completed by South African firms RSL Architects and Jacket Interiors, the 18-month, $56 million redevelopment of the Westcliff hotel included a complete redecoration of all 117 guestrooms, suites, and public spaces and the addition of new restaurants, lounges, and a new-build spa complex.
A curated collection of contemporary African art is highlighted by Hannelie Coetzee’s Face Sculptures in the arrival area. Commissioned especially for the hotel, the giant concrete plinths are topped with sculptures created from mining core drill waste in homage to the area’s platinum and gold mining history. In all, 375 original art pieces were commissioned from local artists for the hotel’s guestrooms and public spaces.
The property also added two new restaurants, Flames and View. With its earthy, natural palette of colors and textures, Flames restaurant has a casual setting with a South African feel; and slated for a January opening, View references the city’s art scene in a space meant to resemble an art gallery. The palette reflects the shades of a cityscape after sunset in midnight and pale blue. The interiors, completed by London-based firm Blacksheep, feature an elegant, elevated dining space designed to complement the food.
Additional restaurants and lounges at the Westclifff Johannesburg will include Cellar Door, Apres-Spa, and Westcliff Deli. The spa is also set to open in January 2015.
Four Seasons recently entered Sub-Saharan Africa with the 2012 opening of Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, the first of several planned properties in Tanzania. Four Seasons Hotel the Westcliff Johannesburg is the brand’s first hotel in South Africa, with resorts in the Seychelles and Mauritius completing the collection.
